New franchise announced 19 June 2014, to run from 22 June 2014 until March 2017. Previous franchises: CrossCountry franchise awarded to Virgin Rail Group Ltd on 28 November 1996 for 15y3m. Operations began 5 January 1997. InterCity West Coast franchise awarded to VRGL on 19 February 1997 for 15 years. Operations began 9 March 1997, ended 9 December 2012. Both franchises run as Management Contracts from July 2002. The DfT announced on 18 October 2005 that CrossCountry was to be relet. Notice of termination was served in October 2005. Virgin CrossCountry ended 11 November 2007 (became [Arriva] CrossCountry). Virgin West Coast franchise was renegotiated and restarted 13 December 2006 (to terminate 31 March 2012, but extended on 27 October 2011 to continue until 9 December 2012).
