Home signal

(SEMAPHORE) A warning signal which gives an early indication of the state of a home signal, sited sufficiently in advance to allow adequate braking distance. The equivalent colour-light aspects are SINGLE YELLOW (= next signal is red) and DOUBLE YELLOW (= next signal is single yellow).

Distant signals were originally red, with a fishtail notch. Yellow began to be used in the 1920s for the arm and the upper aspect glass, soon becoming the standard.

A FIXED DISTANT provides a permanent caution. The arm is installed in the horizontal position and has no wire or mechanism. In recent times, a sign showing a distant arm as a graphic has sometimes been used for the same purpose.
