New deal to boost rail freight in Britain _______________________________________________________________

date 24 January 1997 source Railtrack plc
type Press release
Railtrack has shaken hands on a deal with freight company English Welsh and Scottish Railway which will underwrite the majority of its freight income.
The deal has been struck after several months of negotiations, and is now being formalised by lawyers before being submitted to the Rail Regulator for ratification.
"English Welsh and Scottish Railway is, by far, our largest freight customer, accounting for 80 per cent of our freight income," said Michael Howell, Railtrack's Director, Commercial. "This deal has two important features. Its structure will allow EWS to develop the rail freight market more easily and it secures much of our freight income for the next four years."
