Exeter St David’s station is to receive a major £2.5 million facelift.

As part of Railtrack Great Western’s £16m investment in local rail stations, canopies will be repaired and repainted, along with the footbridge. Floors will be resurfaced, brickwork repointed and station timberwork repainted.

At a launch at the station Railtrack spokesman Peter Stewart released details of the programme to boost the quality of the Zone’s stations by 2001.

"Exeter St David’s is in the first phase of 15 stations in South Wales and the West Country to benefit from this programme. £16m will be invested in local stations to repair damaged buildings, roofs and footbridges, improve passenger information facilities and provide a more pleasant physical environment for customers. The work at Exeter is scheduled for completion by November.

"Additionally over £1m is being spent at Taunton resurfacing platforms, reglazing, repairing fences and general redecoration to the station."

On the first anniversary of its privatisation, Railtrack, the national track, signal and station owner, has earmarked a £1 billion regeneration programme for 2,500 stations throughout Britain.

Specific plans for each station were developed following detailed surveys that highlighted areas in need of improvement.

Other main projects in the Zone include nearly £1m on upgrading Bath station and a £3.7m refurbishment of South Wales and West’s maintenance depot at Cardiff Canton.
