A £1 billion regeneration programme to modernise Railtrack's 2,500 stations by the year 2001, which at its height, will involve a daily workforce of over 5,000, was launched on Railtrack's first birthday as a private sector company (20 May).

The promotional events at Paddington and 14 stations around the country were mirrored online, by the adition of a new 'Regeneration Programme' section to the Railtrack web site (http://www.railtrack.co.uk/regeneration).

Railtrack is keen to use the Internet as an integral part of its communications campaign, and the web site address will be available on postcards and leaflets. Members of the public will be encouraged to visit the site to keep themselves up-to-date with the latest developments to their local station.

The colours of the regeneration programme, eye-catching lime green and blue, which will be seen on station hoardings around the country, have been carried across to the web site pages to create a strong link with the work being carried out.

Initial information on the site will detail the national programme and focus in on some of the regeneration highlights such as Edinburgh Waverley and Brighton. Plans for the site include an interactive e-mail news list which will automatically inform people who sign up of the project progress. A special regeneration clock, monitoring project expenditure, will also feature on the site in the future.
