Work starts on West Ham's new station

West Ham's new station is on the way. Railtrack, the national rail infrastructure owner, has just started work on the £3million structure

The new station is to be constructed alongside the existing West Ham underground station on the Fenchurch Street line between London and Barking. Due to open next summer it will have a 12-car island platform and a long waiting shelter. Access will be via the new Jubilee line station.

The station will provide the LTS with an interchange with the North London Line and London Underground's Hammersmith & City, District and impending Jubilee Line services. Engineers have already begun work on moving the overhead power cables and are about to start constructing a sound-absorbent fence to shield nearby properties.

The majority of the work will be carried out during winter weekends when trains are being diverted into Liverpool Street. Weekday commuters will not be affected by the work and Railtrack have given assurances that it will be doing everything possible to ensure that construction noise levels are kept to a minimum.

Once the fence is complete, engineers will be starting work creating the new stairways. The platform will then be constructed, followed by the waiting shelter. The work will finish with installation of a lift.

Railtrack East Anglia director Michael Holden said: "Although the new station will be relatively small, the benefits it will give to LTS Rail travellers will be considerable. I'm sure that once it is open, people will wonder how they ever managed to do without it.

"The station is going to benefit an enormous amount of people as it will shorten many people's journey times. West Ham residents will be able to get to the City in just eight minutes and for other LTS travellers the station will be an excellent place to change onto the Underground. By using the forthcoming Jubilee line all LTS stations will have easy links with the West End and mainline stations like Waterloo and London Bridge. It's yet another improvement to the LTS line and one that we know will prove very popular".
