Connex and Kent County Council sign up for new trains and better stations

Brand new trains and welcoming stations are in prospect for travellers throughout Kent as Connex and Kent County Council sign up for a partnership for progress set to transform the county's transport system.

As well as high quality trains quickly and brighter, more secure stations suitable for disabled passengers, the focus will be on integrated transport with better bus interchange, park and ride, bike storage and rail/bus through tickets.

The way will be opened for wide ranging discussion of timetable and service improvement plans and opportunities will be explored for new rail links.

Also, there will be an assessment of projects unlikely to be financed by Connex or Railtrack, but for which external funding could be sought, particularly from the Strategic Rail Authority.

Connex Chief Executive Officer Olivier Brousse said: "We are delighted to sign up for partnership with Kent County Council. The best hope for the future of our railway in Kent is for all its stakeholders to work together. Connex is committed to encourage that and deliver tangible improvements to its quality of service"

Kent County Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration Alex King said: "We will be a critical friend to Connex - encouraging and supportive, but also not afraid of questioning and challenging to ensure continuous improvements for all Kent's rail users."

The Memo will be signed aboard a brand new Class 375 air-conditioned train at Ashford on Wednesday 17 October.
