This section contains information about British passenger rail franchises since 1996 and contracts since 2020.

The Department for Transport suspended all English franchises on 23 March 2020 and abolished them permanently in September. They were then replaced by management contracts, and some have now become National Rail contracts.
Others have received temporary directly awarded contracts which are set to become full National Rail contracts in due course.
