::: Support for rail services set to rise to 8bn this year

This section contains information about British passenger rail franchises since 1996.

Click on the links on the left for details.

UPDATE: the Department for Transport suspended all English franchises on 23 March 2020 (Scottish Government, April 2020). They were replaced by Emergency Measures Agreements which ran until 20 September 2020. On 21 September the DfT said that the EMAs were being replaced by ERMAs, or Emergency Recovery Measures Agreements, with immediate effect, and that rail franchising was over. (For more details see notes on current franchise pages.)

All franchise entries in this section reflect the situation that existed up to 22 March. In particular, notes about contract durations and expiry dates no longer apply.
