Signal Passed At Danger.
Industry definition which describes any incident in which a train passes a red signal, even if only by a metre or two. SPADS are logged and reported annually by the Office of Rail and Road. The incidence of SPADS has fallen in modern times.
A driver who allows a SPAD has committed a disciplinary offence, and may be suspended for additional training, although this will depend on the circumstances.
Tramway operators sometimes use another acronymn – SPAR – which means Signal Passed at Red.
